For an alternative to the commercial gay scene (one reason I loved Frenchies) there is Queer Mutiny. They organise various events and "We are a DIY, non-hierarchical Collective" The website has not been updated for some time unfortunately.

Abbeyhill Regent-2010a

Regent Bar. Edinburgh's gay real ale pub. Also serves food and has a space for local artists to display their work.

New Town Blue Moon-2010a

Blue Moon Cafe. Has been open since the 80s although it was a little further down the road then. Relaxing cafe that serves great food

New Town The Street- 2011a

The Street was previously the site of QTs Edinburgh's first gay cabaret bar - in the early 90s. Now it's a nice friendly bar with basement. Quiz nights and DJs on different nights.

New Town Old Laughing Duck-2010a

The old Laughing Duck THE gay pub in the 80s and early 90s. Returned to us briefly in 2001/2 but now The Standard and no longer gay. Wild nights and a disco downstairs.

New Town Old  Linden Hotel-2010 (1)a

The Linden hotel which in the 80s and 90s was a gay hotel with a bar that was very popular on sunday afternoons when only hotels could serve alcohol. Laterly there was a Thai restaurant on site. Appears to be flats now.

New Town Old Key West-2010a

This was Key West and was gay from around 1982 until 1990.It was previously a straight bar called Upstairs Downstairs and in 1991 for a few months upstairs became the Powder Room which was a lot of fun. It was famous for its metal floor and chains hanging from the bar.

New Town Planet-2010a

Planet has been gay since the early 90s when it started as Route 66. It was previously a straight bar called Stage Door. Now has quiz nights and DJ nights

New Town Nom De Plume-2010a

Edinburgh's Gay Centre was opened in 1974 and is the oldest in Europe if not the world. It has had various businesses over the years - shops, cafes but has meeting rooms downstairs. Currently Nom De Plume serves great food there and Pride Scotia use the rooms

New Town GHQ-2010a

GONE

GHQ Large gay club opened in 2007. Open 7 nights with a different theme and caters for the fashionable crowd.

Old Blue Oyster

At the end of this street used to be a club called the Blue Oyster. Now there is just the back of a building.Originally a straight club Edgars, it became gay in 1989. They used to open until 6am, they'd serve breakfast, they'd put on acts such as hypnotists and it had microchip wallpaper. Always a fun time but it burned down in 1993.

Old Town Old Millies-2010a

This was Millionaires or Millies and you always went in and out of this entrance as opposed to todays South Bridge entrance.It opened in the mid 80s and closed in the mid 90s. It used to open until 6am and was a gay club that always attracted a lot of straight people

Frenchies Outside-2007 (1)

French Connection opened in 1990. A small intimate bar that was always friendly. Paul took over in 2002 (renamed Frenchies) and it was sometimes wild sometimes quiet and falling to bits but you always got talking to a wide variety of people. It closed in March 2010 and reopened under new owners. It is now a straight bar.

Special mention must be made to the Sunday Club. It started out run by Chapps around 1991 and took place in the club next to the Playhouse that nowadays is never open but says Overtures above it. It was taken over and moved to Walkers at the West End where once a month they would have a club with acts such as strippers, Lily Savage, and people standing around with balloons or snakes. It was open til 6am and served breakfast. It moved to Fountainbridge then disappeared around 1995

New Town Newtown Bar-2010 (1)a

Newtown opened in 1991 as a quiet bar to compliment Chapps, it was previously a stright bar called Brahms It changed it's image and name to Twist in 2006 but it didn't work so now it's the Newtown again. The basement is a dark cruisy area.

New Town Q Store-2010a

Q store originally in the basement of Blue Moon but has been next door for some years. This is Scotland's only licensed gay sex store and sells a wide variety of sex goods.

New Town Princes St Old Fire Island-2010 (2)a

Opened in the early 80s Fire Island was a famous gay club and hosted many acts and parties. It closed in 1988 and is now Waterstones bookshop

Abbeyhill Priscillas-2010a

For many years a bar called The Old Salt, it opened as a gay bar around 2006 and was called Destination. Laterly it was called Priscillas and had a cabaret type theme with regular drag shows. Closed Spring 2012

New Town Old Star-2010a

The Star has been The Star at least since the early 80s but in the mid 80s to mid 90s it was a gay bar. It hasn't altered its appearance since at least 1982
