There are many legends concerning hauntings in Charlotte Square. A ghostly piano has been heard on quiet nights and a hooded figure has been seen strolling around the square in 18th century clothes. There is also said to be a ghostly carriage pulled by horses that appears when the square is free of modern traffic.
The Forrester family built Corstorphine Castle and owned the estate for many centuries but just before their fortunes turned sour and they were forced to sell, tragedy struck. In 1679 Lord James Forrester was stabbed to death by his lover at the Sycamore tree beside the dovecot where they used to meet. He attacked her during an argument and she used his sword to stab him to death. She was beheaded for her crime and it is said that her ghost has been seen by the tree carrying a sword. The tree stood until 1998 when it was sadly blown down in high winds.
RADISSON BLU HOTEL (FORMERLY SCANDIC CROWN) ROYAL MILE
The hotel is on the site of Stichen's Close where Bloody Mackenzie once lived. The area has been plagued by fires (in 1992 the hotel burned down) attributed to Mackenzie's poltergeists. Here are two stories I had sent to the website.
Submitted by a visitor who was here on business in November 2011:
"I arrived from London yesterday evening with a pack suitcase which was locked.
I had a smoke at the airport and put my lighter away in my pocket. Nothing unusual there, I hear you say...
Well I took a taxi to the hotel and checked in. As they were preparing my room, I decided I would have another smoke before I turned in for the night. I checked all my pockets and I could not find my lighter.... I assumed it must have fallen out of my pocket in the taxi.
Later as I was trying to sleep, I could hear noises coming out of the bathroom as if someone was moving my toiletries around... I thought nothing of this and tried to sleep...
This happened a few times so I just put in some ear plugs, thinking there must be something up with the aircon in the hotel.
Well this morning I took my suit out of the dry cleaners packaging... with my suit sealed in by tape. I put my hand in my pocket to put my wallet away and I found my lighter in my suit pocket....
Strange as it was in a locked suitcase and put away in a plastic bag which was taped shut by the dry cleaners..."
Jennifer Campbell-Berry left her experience on the guestbook.
I checked into a room on the fourth floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Edinburgh last November. Hearing that a ghost liked to disturb hotel guests on that floor, I dismissed the rumour with scepticism. That is until I turned the television on and placed the remote on the bed. Suddenly, the television took on a life of its own and the screen went from channel to channel. It also became very cold around the bed. I phoned downstairs and asked the concierge to make sense of what just happened. There was a brief pause before the man replied with a lovely Scottish accent as thick as pea soup, "Well, that's a wee bit creepy!"
With that, I decided to go to sleep - with the blanket over my head!
The next morning, I went to the elevator. When it arrived, I hopped in with another guest. We pressed the ground floor button. Like the television set, the elevator took on a life of its own. We went up to another floor before stopping at every floor on the way down.
IF it was an apparition, it clearly meant no harm. I felt that it was only trying to make its presence known. (Thank you Jennifer)
